a cheery playground for writers and artists, with uplifting news about the Rogue Valley and beyond

I am Constance Frankland, owner/founder of the WRITE place (for Goodness’ sake!),  a Grants Pass business specializing in creative writing.  I’m a member of Authors Innovative Marketing, Grants Pass/Josephine County Chamber of Commerce, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature/minor in Writing and a Master’s degree in Education.

At Pacific Lutheran University I studied writing with award-winning authors-in-residence Lesley Hazleton and Richard Murphy and Professor/environmentalist Dr. Charles Bergman.  I thank my PLU mentors, Dr. Audrey Eyler (English Department Chair) and Dr. Dennis Martin (Humanities Division Dean). They were creative and gifted teachers, compassionate shepherds, lovers of literature, and unflagging supporters of lifelong learning. I remember  Dr. Richard Moe (Dean, School of the Arts) with deep affection and unwavering respect for providing academic flexibility in the workplace and for awarding my first scholarship.  I thank fellow Adult Returning Student Janice Sigurdsen for her undying daily encouragement and the occasional proffered hankie as remedy for hot, frustrated tears.  May God bless them all!

I returned to college at age 38 to prepare to teach in the California public school system, specializing in Curriculum and Instructional Leadership.

Work in the Field

I’m an experienced public and private school classroom teacher who was twice Landmark Middle School’s Teacher of the Year in Moreno Valley, California, an elementary Title I teacher/facilitator, middle school School Improvement Coordinator, and a MVUSD Mentor teacher specializing in Classroom Management.

In the late ’70s and early ’80s I co-authored Toward a Better Beginning: A Handbook for the Childbirth Education Association of Tacoma and edited the CEA monthly newsletter, Transition Times.  My humor essays have been published in The Tacoma News Tribune and Vicky Lansky’s Practical Parenting.  An original skit was awarded First Place in a United Way street theatre contest (Tacoma); another playlet was published by the Methodist Church Women’s Auxiliary and performed in at least one Pacific NW church. My poetry and fiction found print in PLU’s Saxifrage and Artella eMagazine.  As Production Editor for The Artella Daily Muse, a daily online creativity newspaper, a staff monitor for the ArtellaLand website, and an occasional Artella magazine copyeditor and contributor until 2010, I enjoyed the gift of working as if it were play. Thank you, Marney and Tony Makridakis, for that extravant joy!

More recently, I’ve copyedited the Grants Pass/Josephine County Chamber’s annual Profile magazine, James Rawles’ Land of Promise, Ryner Kruger’s Thailand Calling, Mabel Sets the Table and Josh Gets a Wash by local edu-tainer and Princess trainer Anna Martinez Minter, and local author Ellie Pulikonda’s contemporary women’s fiction Finding Faith.

My book markers: the changes that change us, a collection of art, essays, fiction, and verse, was published in April 2016.

Community Involvement/Hobbies

Community theatre gives me great joy; I performed onstage for Rogue Music Theatre’s Happy Days,  worked on-book for Barnstormers’ Scrooge: The Musical, and served as Dramaturg and on-book support for Barnstormers’ MacBeth.  At the local Boys & Girls Club, I authored and helped guide middle-school aged actors in one-act plays for the Drama Matters program. At the request of Stage Manager Tianna Eddy, I crafted a One Eleven Theatre Co. article for Southern Oregon Family.

I especially enjoyed serving as a Rogue Valley Symphony volunteer and joining others at the Grants Pass Museum of Art’s Second Friday poetry night.

Gardening, travel, bicycling, entertaining our Border Collie, and reading happily fill my days.
